Facebook Scams You Need To Know About: The 9 Most Common Hacks and Attacks

Given Facebook’s fame, it was only a matter of time before con-artists brought their scams onto the network. Facebook today is infested with dozens of different scams, with increasing reports of users falling victim to foul play. If you’re an avid facebook user, here are 9 common scams that you should look out for, and avoid when they inevitably come your way.

1. Clickjacking

Ever seen applications asking you to paste certain chunks of technical (and illegible) code in your browser address bar? This is essentially what clickjacking is; tricking you to paste harmful code in your browser that authorizes foreign access to your Facebook, baiting your curiosity with “Find out who is stalking you!” claims.

2. Fake Friend Requests

Ever get friend requests from strangers? That might be because programmed bots were created to expand a scammer's social network for personal gain. You might think it’s harmless to accept their request, but what you are unaware of is that they might be just looking to send you spam or viruses. We know it’s hard to turn down a friend request from a Megan Fox lookalike, but think about it, are you really that lucky?

3. Phishing

Phishing simply means an attempt to steal your important personal details (credit card info, passwords) by posing as an authorized or trustworthy site. Facebook has had several of such scams, including some tricky ones that resemble a facebook portal asking you to re-login. The best way to spot phishing sites is to look out for unusual-looking URLs in the address bar.

4. Malicious Pages, Groups & Events

Many scam pages exist solely to extract and collect personal information from you. Such pages and groups often try to trick you into inviting your friends to join them or participate in their quizzes (sometimes booby-trapped with phishing schemes) by offering you phony gifts and rewards. Some of these pages may be pose as authentic companies like Microsoft or Apple in order to gain your trust.

5. Fake “Team Facebook” Emails

The real Team Facebook always sends messages telling you they will never ask for personal information such as passwords, and they mean it. If you ever get an email or message from “Team Facebook” asking you for passwords, you can be sure they are looking to steal your personal information.

6. Worms & Viruses

For a content-rich network like Facebook, there are plenty of opportunities to lay mines for worms and other computer viruses. One such example is the koobface worm in 2008, which posed as links to Adobe Flash Player updates and were circulated to disastrous consequences. Although Koobface worms have mostly been stamped out, there are still cases of infection so watch out for those.

7. Western Union Money Scam

An extremely scary scam, this one poses as your friend, sending you a request to urgently transfer cash to him via Western Union (most commonly) or through other wiring services like PayPal. This is where it works best. How do you turn down a friend in need? You don’t, and your money gets stolen. Be very wary when you are asked for money. Tell your friend to call you personally if he needs it that desperately.

8. Unauthorized Surveys

It’s extremely common to take polls and quizzes on Facebook. Everyone does, and it’s not a surprise to see your friend update his status about how he is "Captain America of the Avengers”. It’s fun, but watch out for the kind of quizzes you are taking. Some surveys redirect you outside of Facebook, while others require you to enter personal details such as your contact number before you can view results. Reject these, as most of them are scams looking to get your personal details.

9. Harmful Apps

Harmful apps often look like they are the real thing. They disarm you with images and text that make them look authentic and harmless, whereas in reality they just want to trick you into “allowing” the app. Once allowed, the app now has liberty to send fake announcements and messages to your network of friends. Heard of the infamous “Facebook Shutdown” scam? This was how it originated.

3D home movies: A new dimension in camcorders

New dimension: Panasonic has launched the world's first 3D camcorder

So far, the 3D revolution has been all about Hollywood blockbusters and major sporting events. Now the cutting-edge technology is coming a little closer to home.

Treasured moments such as a child’s first steps or a university graduation can be captured in 3D with the arrival of the first camcorder capable of filming in more than two dimensions.

Unveiled by Panasonic today, the HDC-SDT750 3D model works using a sophisticated double lens.

Company spokesman Barnaby Sykes said: ‘Just as we have two eyes, so the 3D camcorder has two lenses side by side.

‘The camcorder itself acts like the human brain in converging the two images together to create one picture in 3D.’

The images can be played back on 3D television sets. They are watched through so-called active shutter glasses, which open and close over each eye in an alternating pattern 60 times a second.

This means that each eye sees a slightly different view of the same scene, so the brain is tricked into thinking it is seeing a single image in 3D.

Mr Sykes said: ‘One of the prob-lems with 3D technology so far has been the relative lack of content – the films and TV programmes that ‘Our research indicates that people will want 3D to record important family moments. That offers a huge emotional pull.'

Many of the world’s technology giants have launched 3D TV sets in recent months. Sony also offers a camera to create 3D still images.

The camcorder has a slot for memory cards to store the footage and create a 3D library of a family’s most important moments.This can be slotted into a 3D television set for viewing.

Customers can also buy a 3D burner to copy the film footage on to DVDs to be stored and viewed later through a Blu-ray DVD player.

In the future, the lens system could be used to allow people to make 3D video calls over the internet, making this sort of communication much more like real life.

Other functions on the 3D camcorder include face recognition, where the camera seeks out a particular person in a group shot and ensures it is focused on them.

A ‘smile shot’ function means it automatically captures a still image during recording when it detects a smiling face on the subject.

Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport smashes fastest car record

The production model of the car is able to generate 1,200-hp with a maximum torque of 1,500 Newton metres and a limited top speed of 258mph - to protect the tyres

The land speed world record for a production car has been smashed by a Bugatti sports car.

In a flash of orange and black, the Veyron 16.4 Super Sport achieved an incredible average top speed of 267.8mph - far exceeding the expectations of Bugatti's engineering team.

Bugatti’s chief engineer Dr. Wolfgang Schreiber said: 'We took it that we would reach an average value of 264mph but the conditions today were perfect and allowed even more.'

It was accepted into the Guinness World Book of Records by officials.

The previous top speed for a production car had been 256.1mph which was set by a SSC Ultimate Aero in 2007.

Driven by Pierre-Henri Raphanel, the redesigned Veyron 16.4 Super Sport hit 265.9mph when driven against the wind and 269.8mph with the wind at a racetrack in Ehra-Lessien, Germany.

The production model of the car is able to generate 1,200-hp with a maximum torque of 1,500 Newton metres and a limited top speed of 258mph - to protect the tyres.

The twin-clutch, seven-speed gearbox allows for precision turning and braking and accelerating stability.

Overall control of the car has improved with the raised main-spring travel, stronger stabilisers and new shock absorbers.

The skin is made entirely of carbon-fibre composites to reduce its weight and body modifications include expanded and reshaped front air intakes and a re-shaped rear.

The new all-carbon fibre structure also provides maximum torsion rigidity, crucial when hitting extremely high speeds.

The first five Super Sports to come off the production line will constitute a special series with the same set-up as the land speed record car.

The Super Sport will begin production this autumn at Molsheim along with the Veyron and the Grand Sport.

The first five cars – known as the World Record Edition – are in a special black exposed carbon and orange finish and have already been sold.

Owning a Lamborghini supercar is the stuff of dreams for most young men, wherever they live.

And if you happen to be a twentysomething lorry driver from rural China, that dream would seem all the more unattainable.

But that fact only served to spur on 25-year-old Chen Jinmiao.

Realising he would never earn enough money to buy the real thing, Chen decided to build his own.

A year and the equivalent of £2,000 building later, he had his very own 'Lamborghini'.

And Chen is more than happy with his replica of the famous Italian sports marque - even if its 60 mph top speed is some 150mph behind the real thing.

Chen, of Binzhou in Hunan province, said: 'I downloaded the drawings from the internet, then bought the materials from the market.'

His bright yellow car even has the original's signature scissor doors.

But Chen, who has no formal engineering training, has yet to hear whether he will be allowed to drive his 'baby Lambo' on public roads.

The terrifying moment a Mini Cooper S rolled into crowd of spectators

Spectators ran for their lives when a race car sailed through the air towards them after a dramatic crash in Australia.

The Mini had clipped another vehicle during the race in Brisbane, rolled along the track - then sailed through the air straight towards the crowd of spectators.

It seemed that disaster was only a split second way as the red vehicle dropped down towards the scattering crowd.

Amazingly, the Mini came to rest having only struck two men, neither of whom sustained life-thretening injuries

Yet only two people were hit and were said to be recovering from their injuries in hospital.

'It's amazing that more people were not seriously injured,' said Australian racing legend Dick Johnson.

'This particular race track is very sub-standard... You have to look after people who pay money to come to these places.'

Spectators were amazed that he was able to step out of the wreck of the number 8 Mini, which had rolled several times before hitting the fence and soaring through the air.

Microsoft launch Fix-It Center to solve computer faults

Anyone with a Microsoft computer will know the huge frustration felt when faced with an error message or a frozen screen.

But those days could soon be over after the software giant released new 'Fix It' software, which is designed to be your own personal computer technician.

Microsoft said the new software is designed to fix early glitches before they develop into faults that crash your computer

A beta or test version of the software promises 'tools that help solve the issues you have now and prevent new ones.'

Once uploaded, the free program should automatically scan your computer and diagnose and common faults. It will then ask if you want it to be repaired.

It has fixes for around 300 of the most commonly encountered problems that stop Windows from working properly. The vast database of faults was created by automatic reports sent back by Windows computers that experienced crashes, bugs and so on.

It is primarily intended for Windows XP and Vista users.

The Fix It software works to resolve 300 common Microsoft computer problems

If the 'Fix It' program cannot solve the problem it provides detailed information that can be sent to Microsoft's support staff about what has gone wrong.
